
The Surah, commonly known as the Ummr Quran or Ummr Kitab, is the basis of the salat (prayer). Muslims widely read Surah Fatiha, also known as Surah Al-Hamd, beginning with the phrase “Alhamdulillah.”
The greatness of Surah Al-Fatihah was mentioned by Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. himself. He told his companion, Abu Sa’id bin Mu’alla r.a. that he s.a.w. was going to teach him the greatest Surah before Abu Sa’id r.a. could leave the mosque. Later, when Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. intended to leave the mosque, Abu Sa’id reminded him by asking:
أَلَمْ تَقُلْ ”لأُعَلِّمَنَّكَ سُورَةً هِيَ أَعْظَمُ سُورَةٍ فِي الْقُرْآنِ”. قَالَ ”(الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ) هِيَ السَّبْعُ الْمَثَانِي وَالْقُرْآنُ الْعَظِيمُ الَّذِي أُوتِيتُهُ”
Didn’t you tell me, “I will teach you a Surah, the greatest Surah in the Qur’an?” The Prophet answered, “The Grand Quran which has been given to me, and Al-Sab’a Al-Mathani (seven repeatedly recited Verses) which is “Alhamdulillahi Rabbi-l-lamin” (Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds).” The first chapter of the Quran, known as Surah Al-Fatihah, is considered one of the most essential Surahs, and it is recited in almost all prayers, providing several benefits.
