Kim Mulkey, the head coach of LSU’s women’s basketball team, shredded her blazer the first time she entered the glitter queen territory. Recall Mulkey’s famous white blazer with butterflies from last year. She wore that for the first time on game day from the young Queen of Sparkles clothing collection by Baton Rouge designer Jaime Glas. Glas wasn’t aware Mulkey would be sporting her merchandise until she started receiving a barrage of texts during the game in December 2021. I was simply like, “Wow,” said 34-year-old LSU alumnus and die-hard Tigers supporter Glas. “That’s what made me realise that she was there and that she was a woman. She isn’t messing around. Glas is a former petroleum engineer with Chevron, now a fashion business owner. She is one of the two Baton Rouge fashionistas responsible for Mulkey’s eye-catching attire during LSU’s march to the Final Four. Mulkey purchased three outfits from Queen of Sparkles for the NCAA Tournament, including the “Kiss Me I’m a Queen” jumper vest in white and green for St. Patrick’s Day and the silver sequined jacket she wore while dancing the Griddy after LSU defeated Miami to make its first Final Four since 2008. The jacket was in Gottwald’s private studio until Mulkey put on the feathers for one of her most surprising sideline outfits ever due to COVID interference.

Glas turned to fashion because of necessity.

She had to put on a flame-resistant jumpsuit while working in the oil fields at Chevron. But she discovered that women’s jumpsuits weren’t available, and the men’s small ones engulfed her. Her supervisor gave the go-ahead for her to create her outfit.
